MATTERHORN

Switzerland  is a landlocked nation of 7.5 million people in Western Europe. It is bordered by Germany, France, Italy, Austria and the tiny principality of Liechtenstein. Switzerland is multilingual, with four official languages: German, French, Italian and the lesser-known Romansh. Switzerland is divided administratively into 26 cantons, six of which are sometimes referred to as "half-cantons," since they stemmed from the split of three cantons and have as a consequence only a single representative in the Council of States. Switzerland has had a long history of being neutral during war and peace-time.

Switzerland comprises three basic topographical areas: the Swiss Alps, the Swiss plateau or "middleland", and the Jura mountains along the northwest border with France. The Alps are a high mountain range running across the central-south of the country.

The most famous mountain is the Matterhorn (4478 m) in Kanton Wallis and Pennine Alps bordering Italy. The highest mountain, the Dufourspitze or Monte Rosa, is very close to the Matterhorn.

The Swiss climate is generally temperate, but can vary greatly between the localities, from glacial conditions on the mountain tops to the often pleasant Mediterranean climate at Switzerland's southern tip. Summer tends to be warm and humid at times with periodic rain so it is ideal for pastures and grazing. The winters in the mountains alternate with sun and snow, while the lower lands tend to be more cloudy and foggy in winter.

Aargau is one of the more northerly cantons of Switserland. It comprises the lower course of the river Aare.     Its total area is 1,404 km², its population is 573,654 (as of 2005). The capital is Aarau. It borders Germany to the north. To the west lie the cantons of Basel-Landschaft, Solothurn and Bern. The canton of Lucerne lies south of the canton of Aargau, Zürich and Zug to the east....

Vaud Vaud
The Canton of Vaud is one of the 26 cantons of Switserland and is located in the southwestern part of the country. The capital is Lausanne.  The canton stretches from Lake Neuchatel in the north, where it borders the canton of Neuchatel to Lake Geneva in the south, bordering the canton of Geneva, Haute-Savoie (lake border with France) and canton of Valais. On the Jura ranges in the west, the canton...

Valais Valais
The Valais is one of the 26 cantons of Switserland in the south-western part of the country, in the Pennine Alps around the valley of the Rhone River from its springs to Lake Geneva. The canton is one of the drier parts of Switzerland in its central Rhone valley. Paradoxically it is also one of most well-watered parts, having large amounts of snow and rain up on the highest peaks found...

Ticino Ticino
Ticino is a very interesting part of Switzerland; it's the wedge of warm country that's almost completely surrounded by Italy. The culture here is decidedly Italian, and you'll hear Italian spoken just about everywhere, yet the Ticino has been controlled by the Swiss since the early 1500s. The climate is mild and the plants sub-tropical, the canton of Ticino is stunningly beautiful. The Ticino is a great place for a walking,...

Bern Bern
Bern, the federal capital, is situated in the heart of Switzerland, which in turn lies at the center of Europe. Thanks to its central location, Bern is easily accessible and a favorite starting point for trips and excursions to the Alps, the Bernese Oberland, the Swiss Mittelland (Emmental, Seeland), the Jura, Lake Geneva and its surroundings, the Swiss interior and the Valais. An additional attraction of Bern as your base is...
